Mental Health in a Modern Work Environment: Supporting Employee Mental Health

Online Event 22 June 2022, 9:00am

Overview

Poor mental health has been identified as the second most common cause of years lived with disability, where the highest incidence is observed within the working-age population, according to the Government’s consultation – Advancing Our Health: Prevention in the 2020s. Based on data from the Centre for Mental Health, employers are predicted to spend £34.9 billion on mental health concerns annually. As COVID-19 has brought modern working style into the virtual world, the questions of how to keep a healthy mental state and keep ourselves resilient become equally important as boosting productivity in the workplace.

In 2021, poor mental health for the first time surpassed the pandemic as the primary reason for staff days off, with an estimated cost of £43 billion to employers, according to the GoodShape’s UK PLC 2021 Workforce Health Report. The lack of support from the management level is reflected in a survey of 1,000 key decision-makers in business, where 58% of respondents reported they did not include mental health support for their staff. This corresponds with 41% of employees reporting a lack of confidence in managerial support with mental health issues.

Further, the Mental Health at Work 2019 Report revealed that nearly 80% of LGBTQ+ employees have experienced work-related mental health issues, 18% higher than those who don’t identify themselves as LGBTQ+. 30% of the BAME staff also reported experiencing negative workplace behaviour or outcomes due to their ethnicity.

This timely event will unpack the challenges and difficulties of supporting the UK workforce’s mental health, especially in the post-pandemic era. The event will highlight the leadership skills and best practices enabling employers to identify, track, and improve the conversation channels with their employees and understand their critical roles in the mental health journeys of staff.
