The Institute of Government & Public Policy was set-up as an institute within the Royal Docks School of Business and Law, University of East London.
While we operate nationally, we are proud to have our academic home in East London.
The University has been pioneering futures since 1898, from the second Industrial Revolution to the fourth.
We were formed to further the University’s Vision 2028, an ambitious 10-year strategy to reinvent the University and reimagine the role of Higher Education.
As one of the most diverse, vibrant and socially-inclusive universities in the UK, the strategy builds upon the institution’s longstanding commitment to inclusion and social mobility and advances research and entrepreneurial knowledge to help people and the planet.

The University’s strategic objectives are:
The Institute is positioned to further the Future Life strategic objective.
The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Amanda Broderick, is the guiding force behind our partnership and oversees our activities through a formal governance framework.
Day-to-day, our work is led by James Green, our Managing Director. He works alongside our Academic Director, who manages the Institute’s interface with UEL’s academics.
We work with academics across the University, drawing on their skills, knowledge, and experience, to better understand public policy.
For example, we work closely with the University’s Police Innovation, Enterprise, and Learning Centre (PIEL) to understand and drive progress change in policing. You can read more about our work with PIEL here.
And, University academics regularly speak at our conferences, to share their research with a wider community.
We are committed to maximising the social impact and shares its operating surplus with the University. These funds are used to contribute to academic research, improve teaching provision, and enhance social mobility in East London.
