Advancing Digitalisation in Public Services 2022

Online 12 May 2022, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Overview

Despite the Government’s plan to allocate an extra £150 billion to public service annually by 2024-25, the path to digitalising the public sector remains a challenge. In June 2021, the Declaration on Government Reform prioritised data and technical knowledge across the government. However, doubts and obstacles for its implementation remain unsolved, including IT legacy, low digital awareness, and insufficient organisational communication, all of which highlight the necessity of wider collaboration within the public sector.

In 2017, the UK government released the digital strategy policy paper, which aims to provide the public with a better, more consistent, and user-centred online platform via GOV.UK by creating 25 million verify users by 2020 and sharing data across departments.

The COVID-19 has undoubtedly served as a catalyst for encouraging all departments to provide digital self-service. The user research conducted by the Government Digital Service (GDS) revealed that whilst 61% of respondents felt confident to share their information with the government, citizens are increasingly looking for faster and easier ways to complete their tasks. As the pandemic has transformed face-to-face working style into its ‘new normal’ – which will largely depend on a more efficient, rapid, cost-effective digitalisation of public services.

The Digitalisation of Public Services event will highlight the key issues in how to initiate and sustain the digital transformation plan and provide insights on its costs and benefits within the public sector. The event will further identify the key leadership and management skills for senior-level officials to create a more digital-welcoming environment.
