Day 1. Developing Yourself as a Strategic Leader in the Energy Sector

Welcome, introductions, and personal objective setting.

Industry Landscape Analysis: An examination of the current UK energy sector, including:

  • The energy transition
  • Regulatory environment
  • Technological advancements
  • Sustainability challenges
  • Key players and market dynamics

Self-Assessment and Leadership Styles: Participants complete a leadership style assessment.  Discussion on the importance of self-awareness, strengths, weaknesses, and development areas.

Strategic Mindset Development: Introduction to the role of growth mindset, learning agility, strategic thinking, visioning, and goal setting, in the fast-changing energy context.

Defining Strategic Leadership: Exploring the concept of strategic leadership and its role in the energy industry.

Case Study Analysis: Examining successful and unsuccessful leadership examples in the energy sector.

Key Qualities and Competencies of a Strategic Leader: Identifying the essential skills and qualities of a strategic leader in the energy industry.

Peer coaching conversations, focussing on a self-evaluation, and developing a personal development plan to support your longer-term development as a strategic leader.

Day 2. Leading Colleagues and Building a Resilient Energy Business

Understanding Different Generations: Exploring the perspective, context, characteristics and motivations of different generations in the workplace.

Building High-Performing Teams: Discussing team dynamics, collaboration, and effective leadership.

Talent Management and Development: Strategies for attracting, developing, and retaining top talent in the energy sector.

Performance and Feedback: Discuss various assessment methods (e.g., performance reviews, 360-degree feedback, aptitude tests) to identify high-potential employees.

Retaining Talent: Identify how to create an inclusive and psychologically safe organisational culture that will attract and retain skilled colleagues.

Mentorship and Coaching: The role of mentorship and coaching in developing capabilities within the business. Use the Situational Leadership framework to support the creation of a succession plan.

Day 3. Leading The Way: Organisational Strategy in the Energy Sector

Throughout this session participants will be encouraged to engage with Strategic Visioning and Horizon Scanning: Defining the organization's long-term goals and aspirations.  Use the ‘3 Horizons’ model to examine the balance between managing the business today, and planning for the future.

Strategic Analysis: Use strategy models to conduct a comprehensive analysis of your business’ position.

Develop Strategy from Challenge.  In cross organisational teams, engage with a real strategic challenge; identify the problem statement, and begin to develop approaches to engage with the issue.

Strategy Implementation: Developing action plans and allocating resources to achieve strategic objectives.

Strategic Communication: Effectively communicating the strategy to employees, stakeholders, and the public.

Present your strategy to peers and receive feedback.  Develop a real-world action plan to take with you back into your business.

Day 4: Leading Change in the Energy Sector

Analysing Change in the Sector. Begin by discussing how change is impacting the energy sector right now, including:

  • The energy transition as change: Exploring the specific challenges and opportunities presented by the shift to a low-carbon economy.
  • Regulatory and policy changes: Understanding the impact of evolving regulations on the energy sector and how to navigate them.
  • Technological disruption: Discussing the role of new technologies (e.g., renewables, energy storage, electric vehicles) in driving change.
  • Consumer behaviour shifts: Analysing changing consumer expectations and preferences and their implications for the energy industry.

The Challenge of Change: Exploring the different types of change and their impact on individuals and organizations.  Examine why there is resistance to change and inertia in the sector, understanding the reasons for resistance and strategies to overcome it.

Building a Change-Ready Culture: Creating an environment that embraces and supports change.

Change Management Models: Introducing various change management frameworks (including Kotter's 8-Step Model and ADKAR), and an appraisal of their strengths and weaknesses.

Developing a Change Management Plan: Linking back to the strategy participants developed on Day 3, create a roadmap for successful change implementation.

Communicating Change Effectively: Developing clear and compelling messages about the change.

Engaging Stakeholders: Building support and managing expectations.

Measuring Change Success: Evaluating the impact of change initiatives.

Consolidate learning from the 4 days, action plan, and prepare to take positive action as a strategic leader in your business.
