Online Conference 9 March 2023, 9:00am - 3:00pm
Suicide is the most common cause of death for 20–34-year-olds with rates of suicide in young adults under the age of 25 years old increasing in recent years. The Samaritans has called suicide in the UK a public health issue, as in 2020 6,211 people took their own lives, equating to one person dying every two hours from suicide.
To try and tackle the level of deaths by suicide in the UK the Department of Health and Social Care made available £5.4 million for a grant fund to support suicide prevention organisations across 2021 to 2022. Looking ahead suicide prevention has been outlined in the NHS Long Term Plan with a £57 million pound investment in mental health services. The government has also called for evidence to shape its 10-year cross-government plan to support wellbeing and mental health and refresh the strategy for suicide prevention in England.
This event will examine the various factors that lead to suicide, new societal threats to mental health and identifying key areas and demographics to focus attention and support. This event will also explore various prevention tactics and methodologies to help diffuse a mental health crisis that could lead to someone taking their life. Confirmed speakers include Liz Twist MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Suicide and Self-Harm Prevention, The Samaritans and The Centre For Mental Health. Also speaking are Three Dads Walking, Winners of The Pride of Britain 2022 Special Recognition Award for raising awareness about young people's mental health and fundraising over £1 million for suicide prevention charity, Papyrus.
