Online Conference 2 November 2022, 9:00am - 3:00pm
The Government wants to provide digital justice and high-quality rehabilitation programmes to protect the public while also dispensing justice quickly and accurately. To do this, a criminal justice system that is responsive, flexible, transparent, and just, and places those it serves at the centre of everything, is required. This must contain a vision of a criminal justice system that is technologically advanced.
After nearly two years living through the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to build on this momentum and continue to modernise technology is more pressing than ever. Services that are fit for the internet era, that meet the expectations of people that use them and work on them and allow us to better adapt to the need for remote working, learning and relationships are needed urgently. Staff and service users have put up with outdated devices and systems for far too long. Modern technology is needed that makes working easier and more collaborative.
We rely more than ever on technology and IT systems. Continuous investment is needed to reduce the level of risk in legacy systems and to improve the security of business-critical systems. Technology also has the potential to improve services, creating a far more efficient and accessible justice system.
The Government is committed to delivering a world-class justice system that works for everyone. The pandemic's overall effect has been to hasten the criminal justice system's digital transformation, most notably with the widespread use of video hearings to support the delivery of justice throughout the country.
This event will explore what role technology will play in addressing the criminal justice system's challenges. It will look into key commitments such as the Ministry of Justice’s plans to enable the digital transformation of services for over 1 million users, developing digital services to support priorities and improve access to services. As individuals move from the police station right through to probation, the event will address how secure access to technology and data can deliver the right services for users, enhance efficiencies and transform rehabilitation outcomes.
At a time the Ministry of Justice has seen its budget increase to £11.5 billion to be invested by the end of this parliament, this event will aim to demonstrate how technology has the power to deliver a first-class criminal justice system fit for the modern age.
Last year's Transforming Justice Through Technology 2021 event featured presentations from representatives of Ministry of Justice, Home Office, The Parole Board for England & Wales, and more.
