Tackling obesity amongst adults and children is one of the most serious long-term health issues facing our society, especially in the post-pandemic era. Obesity rates among people in UK have nearly doubled in the last 25 years, with roughly 1 in 4 now being obese. Furthermore, over 60% of adults are overweight or obese, with 40% of women and 33% of UK males falling into this category.
According to NHS Digital data (Nov 2021), the number of young people becoming obese in England increased significantly during the epidemic. At the commencement of primary school in 2019-20, 10% of children were obese, but by 2020-21, the percentage had risen to more than 14%. It increased from 21% to over 25% in the final year of primary school. In the poorest neighbourhoods, rates were twice as high. Further obesity disparities in both adults and children occur in relation to geographical location and race.
In July 2021, the Government introduced its new ‘Tackling Obesity’ strategy to ‘empower people to make healthier choices.’ The recently published ‘Levelling Up in the United Kingdom White Paper’ sets out the Government’s goal to reduce the gap in healthy life expectancy between the most deprived and affluent communities and is expected to address narrowing the gap in healthy life expectancy and reducing obesity.
This pivotal event focuses on the key issues confronting national and local health and social services in tackling obesity levels in the UK in the post-Covid-19 pandemic era. It includes best practice and case studies that show how local and central governments, academia, the NHS and various other authorities are working together to solve major obesity-related problems including its prevention, mental health impact, behavioural change, children's health, and health inequalities.
