Enhancing the Quality of Palliative and End of Life Care Services 2022

Online 6 September 2022, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Overview

Last year, 91,000 more people died than on average (during 2015-20), while 2020 saw the highest number of deaths according to Marie Curie’s 2021 report. The lockdown and social distancing policies further push the number of deaths in the community setting as a result of people’s avoidance to attend a hospital. The data from the Institute for Public Policy Research also reveals an alarming sign that deaths are predicted to be higher in 2031 than in 2020 throughout England. Facing an ageing population in the UK, the question of how to build resilient and sustainable palliative and end-of-life care remains a key issue that requires immediate address.

The surging needs of palliative and end-of-life care significantly strain the resources available to hospitals and care homes. As highlighted by The Better End of Life Report 2021, all kinds of palliative and end-of-life care services reported they were busier than usual without sufficient financial support from the Government. Currently, only a third of their income comes from Government, whilst their operation mainly relies on charity funding. Therefore, the inclusion of carers and social workers will be crucial for the transformation of end-of-life care services that it urgently needs.

This event will address the latest policies and reports on palliative and end-of-life care with the best case studies presenting current challenges and how they were overcome under the huge pressure of the COVID-19 pandemic. This event will also discuss the multi-channel support for carers and patients and how we can improve the care quality within limited budgets.
