Driving Local Authority Environmental Change and Improvement

Online Event 9 June 2022, 9:00am - 3:20pm

Overview

Driving local-led environmental change is crucial in responding and adapting to the challenges of climate change.  The strategies implemented by local authorities are essential in delivering the Government’s Net Zero Strategy and achieving the ambitious targets for decarbonising and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Advances in sustainability require local solutions, and in 2019-20, local authorities collected over 15.5 million tonnes of waste and recycling, and assisted in the reduction of food waste. In 2019/20, councils in England installed over 17,000 electric car charging stations, spending nearly £40 million on flood defence systems and more than £125 per person on environmental services.

In the last five years, eight out of ten councils polled by the Local Government Association had been hit by a climate-related disaster, with little over 23,000 dwellings in England affected by flooding. Over 12,000 neighbourhoods have been identified as being most vulnerable to extreme weather and having a high proportion of those who are least able to respond.

Looking forward, over 230 councils in England have declared a climate emergency, with over two-thirds intending to be carbon neutral by 2030. Implementing tools to promote emissions reductions and build climate-resilient communities at a local level can also address inequities, improve public health, and allow local economies to thrive.

Join us in this pioneering conference to witness how local authorities can tackle the climate emergency and take significant measures to reduce carbon emissions. This event will feature lessons from influential speakers from across councils, charities and government, and insights on improving adaptation and resilience, particularly for groups most vulnerable.
