Dr. Kumar is a Lecturer of Law and Criminology at the University of East London and a Teaching Fellow of Criminal Law at SOAS, University of London. He is also an Associate Tutor at Birkbeck College, University of London, from where he completed his PhD as a Commonwealth Scholar funded by the UK government. His PhD thesis is a qualitative study of stakeholder perceptions of legal reforms brought in the area of child sexual violence in India. He has been working with several NGOs, Governmental Organisations, and Academic & Research Networks in South Asia and the UK in the areas of child sexual violence, gender-based violence, youth justice, child education, and rights of incarcerated people. He has also widely written and published in these areas in academic journals, International Handbooks and print and electronic media. He is a law graduate with BA LLB (Hons) and LLM degrees and holds an MPhil from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, on an Indian government Research Fellowship.
