Online Conference 12 September 2023, 9:00am - 3:00pm
Advancing local-led environmental solutions are critical for driving successful strategies to tackle the climate emergency. Across the UK, over 300 local councils have declared a climate emergency yet many lack the necessary climate action plans, net zero goals, and partnerships to deliver these targets.
The IPCC’s 2022 ‘Mitigation of Climate Change’ Report highlights the importance of local governance and community responses to climate change, indicating the value of local knowledge, diverse approaches to mitigation, and just transitions at a local level.
According to the latest national statistics on local authority greenhouse gas emissions, the South East has the highest level of overall territorial emissions in the UK, with regional variations linked to population size, transport, energy efficiency, housing, and other aspects of economic activity.
IGPP’s most recent data shows that 83% of public sector leaders believe that current local commitments are insufficient for limiting human-caused global heating to 1.5°C, with 46% of respondents indicating that funding, budgeting, and resources are the greatest impediments to implementing meaningful progress for delivering climate goals.
Following the success of IGPP’s ‘Driving Local Authority Environmental Change and Improvement’ and ‘Meeting the Challenges of Net Zero Carbon’ events, this event will explore the necessary mitigations, adaptations and responses that can be taken at a local level to ensure climate-resilient pathways. Join this pivotal conference to learn the crucial role of local responses to the climate crisis, connect with others to build partnerships, and uncover the key priorities for transforming your local area.
