Improving Behaviour and Attendance in Schools

Online 11 May 2022, 9:30am - 3:00pm

Overview

Following successive lockdowns and school closures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to ensure that children and young people attend school.  Following the pandemic, in Autumn 2020 the number of severely absent pupils had grown by 55%.

As a result, an additional 33,270 pupils were severely absent.  According to data from the Department of Education from May 2021, the absence rates for the Autumn term 2020 have remained at 4.7% this year.

Persistent absence has remained at 13% which means that more than 1 in 8 pupils are persistently absent.  The Department of Education is funding a £10 million three-year programme to improve pupil behaviour by pairing schools and MATs with exemplary behaviour practices with schools and MATs who need to improve pupil behaviour.

There is a consultation planned which will explore how to help headteachers ban mobile phones and other revisions to the behaviour and discipline and exclusion guidance.

This timely event will bring together representatives from senior bodies, local authorities, schools and MATs to explore the key issues related to improving behaviour and attendance.
