Is wound care and management in the UK a forgotten burden on healthcare services?
According to a 2018 UK wound care analysis, the annual NHS cost of wound management was £8.3 billion, making it the third-highest expense for the NHS, following cancer and diabetes. Around 67% of these costs were dedicated to managing unhealed wounds, with over 70% of the expenditure attributed to visits from nurses, doctors, or healthcare assistants. Wound care products accounted for only 6% of the overall costs, highlighting the need for improving standards in wound care. Doing so would benefit patients, alleviate the pressure on healthcare staff and redirect vital resources.
The National Wound Care Strategy Programme (NWCSP) is taking action and commissioning the National Wound Care Workforce Framework for England. This framework focuses on improving healing rates, enhancing patient care, and increasing cost-effectiveness while reducing the incidence and recurrence of wounds.
