According to a recent research study, an estimated 3.8 million people in the UK have a wound that needs to be managed by the NHS. That figure represents 7% of the adult population and a 71% increase from 2012/2013. It costs the NHS significantly more to manage unhealed wounds (£5.6 billion per year) than to manage healed wounds (£2.7 billion per year), placing significant cost pressures which could be mitigated with earlier intervention.
According to evidence cited in a review in Wounds UK, there is unwarranted variation in UK wound care services, underuse of evidence-based practices and overuse of ineffective practices. The National Wound Care Strategy Programme (NWCSP) aims to address the issue of sub-optimal wound care. It focuses on improving care relating to pressure ulcers, lower limb ulcers and surgical wounds. Additionally, the NHS England wound care management project - part of the Leading Change, Adding Value nursing and midwifery framework - seeks to reduce the widespread variation in the assessment and treatment of wounds across the patient pathway with a number of focussed initiatives, enhancing the quality of chronic wound care through innovative solutions that will improve wound healing, prevent harm, increase productivity of staff and produce financial savings in line with the requirements of the NHS Long Term Plan 2.
This timely and informative conference brings together leading practitioners from across the wound care profession to share best practices, innovation and excellence in wound care prevention and management.
