Is wound care and management in the UK a forgotten burden on healthcare services?
According to the most recent reports, an estimated 3.8 million people in the UK live with a chronic wound, accounting for approximately 7% of the UK’s population. These statistics are projected to escalate in the coming decades due to the expected rise in elderly patients.
The total annual cost of wound management was £8.3 billion in 2017/2018. Within this, approximately 67% of these expenses were dedicated to managing unhealed wounds, and more than 70% of these costs were attributed to visits from Nurses, Doctors, or Healthcare Assistants visits. Wound products accounted for just 6% of the overall expenditure. This indicates that improving wound care standards would not only positively impact patients, but it may have a wider implication for healthcare staff – alleviating the pressure and redirecting the resources elsewhere. Therefore, It is paramount that challenges associated with sub-optimal wound care are addressed systemically through staff engagement, training, dissemination of knowledge and best practice, as well as patient empowerment and constructive dialogue.
The National Wound Care Strategy Programme (NWCSP) has several objectives that aim to address inequalities and fluctuations in wound care standards. Through their collaborative approach and work with other organisations, the need for multi-professional collaboration and skills has also been identified, and the National Wound Care Core Capabilities Framework for England sets out to benchmark high-quality provision across all health and care settings involved in the wound care and recovery process so that patients receive congruent and consistent care regardless of locale or clinical setting.
This conference will not only examine and provide an update on the strategic work that has been done so far to resolve many challenges associated with wound care in the UK, but will also provide practical solutions for healthcare providers that can simply and efficiently address those. Through valuable discussions and keynote addresses from experts in wound care, this event will be a fantastic opportunity to learn more about initiatives and practical solutions that are likely to make a substantial difference to patients and staff alike.
