Tackling and Preventing Violent Crime

Online Event 13 September 2022, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Overview

A total of 1.2 million incidents of violence were recorded in the year ending March 2020, affecting an estimated 1.6% of adults in England and Wales, including victims of homicide, serious injury, wounding, and violence with a minor injury and no injury.

By 2021, the number of violent incidents decreased by 15%, yet rates of domestic abuse-related violent offences rose by 6%, and overall violent crime remains a pressing issue.

The Government’s Beating Crime Plan, announced in July 2021, focuses on fighting violent crime with a £17 million package for creating violence reduction units, assisting police and crime commissioners, and implementing specialist support provisions, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.

The 2022 Levelling Up White Paper builds on existing efforts to tackle violent crime, aiming to deliver comprehensive reforms to the border regime to dismantle criminal enterprises, target areas worse affected by violence, and provide greater assurances to victims and the public.

To deliver these objectives, the Government has implemented a £130 million programme with £23 million for early intervention programmes and £30 million to support the police, working with preventative violence reduction units and delivering data-driven policing in violence hotspots.

This event will address the challenges of violent crime to population safety across the country. It will examine how national initiatives and community approaches can be implemented to reduce serious violence and foster better security networks and cultural attitudes.
