Safeguarding Mental Health at Work

Online Conference 18 May 2023, 9:00am - 2:45pm

Overview

According to WHO, 'more than half the world’s population are currently in work and 15% of working-age adults live with a mental disorder' and without the necessary support (whether from their employer or externally), it can impact productivity, absences and confidence of the employee. Over 12 billion working days are lost every year to depression and anxiety alone and this number is countless when expanded to mental health in general. This not only significantly impacts organisations’ ability to function effectively but also limits economic and social opportunities for those affected which can impact families, communities and society.  By recognising the severity of this issue and providing support or lessening the strain on mental health, employers will have a happier but also more effective workforce.

Workplace-related mental health conditions are preventable but often require a proactive approach by management to ensure optimal conditions for their employees. Mental health is often a taboo within workplaces and those affected often do not want to report it due to the culture within the workplace. According to BITC, 30% of employees have no one to talk to about mental health, which can lead to deterioration.

Support groups, greater awareness, and a more inclusive workplace culture can help address workplace-related mental health issues, such as stress which manifests itself both physically and mentally.

Safeguarding Mental Health at Work will explore the impact the legacy of the pandemic has had on mental health at work and what is being done by organisations to support their employees’ well-being. It will examine the future of work and the important shifts in workplace culture, both within employers and employees, as well as what changes will be taken forward.
