Online Conference 19 October 2023, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Overview

In 2021, the government published its Waste Management Plan for England, which set out its ambition for a circular waste economy. The plan emphasised the importance of sustainability, partnerships, and innovative strategies to achieve waste management goals.

Building on the 25-Year Environment Plan (25YEP), the government published its ambitious roadmap, Environmental Improvement Plan 2023, for a cleaner, greener country. The plan aims to maximise resource use and minimise the waste produced. As part of the plan, new incentives will be introduced which aim to drive higher recycling rates and drive towards a circular and sustainable economy.

Local authorities in England are working hard to meet waste management and recycling targets however, they must operate within limited funding and resources while addressing issues related to contamination, public engagement, changing regulations, and limited market demand for recycled materials. Overcoming these challenges requires collaborative efforts and innovative solutions involving stakeholders to promote effective waste management practices that achieve sustainable outcomes.

The Institute of Government & Public Policy's Recycling and Waste Management Conference will present successful strategies and best practice initiatives to deliver against the government's roadmap for a cleaner, greener country. The event will explore comprehensive waste management plans, examples of forming key partnerships with stakeholders, how local authorities are engaging with local communities, and the importance of investment in infrastructure.
