Keynote Address: Is Flexible Working The Key To Gender Equality In The Workplace
  • Government has announced enactment of the right to request flexible working from day one, and the Employment Relations (Flexible Working) bill will make it easier for employees to make requests, but this falls far short of many calls in the government consultation for default flexible working and advertisement of jobs as flexible, so although the move has removed significant exclusions it is unclear how far it will change practices
  • The Covid-19 pandemic led to the spread of flexible working arrangements, and more employers have adopted flexible working practices in recent years, but take-up remains highly gendered, and there is a risk of stigmatisation
  • What can we learn from good practice? .e.g. need for whole-organisation policies; monitoring; leading by example
  • Taking flexibility seriously requires thinking seriously about the job itself (not just where it is done or during which hours) and what it takes to do it, and about organisational culture
