Cllr Hilaria Asumu

Councillor at Walkden South, Salford City Council; Fairer Health for All Fellow at Greater Manchester Integrated Care Partnership

Hilaria's journey embodies resilience and determination in the face of daunting health challenges. Despite facing kidney disease in 2008 and 2010, along with septicaemia, cardiac arrests, and spending two weeks in a coma, she remained determined not to let her illness control her. Instead, she found purpose in serving her community, volunteering tirelessly even in her darkest hours. In 2017, Hilaria faced setbacks when she was initially disappointed about not being eligible for a transplant. However, she did not give up and continued to be dedicated to advocacy and service. In March 2018, a life-saving kidney transplant transformed her life, despite initial rejection. Today, she thrives dialysis-free, a testament to her unwavering strength.

She became a beacon of hope, advocating for organ donation within the Black African community after being inspired by her own journey and losses she witnessed. She has a global impact, providing kidney care education and building a dialysis centre in Nigeria for those in need, especially women and girls living in poverty.
