Online Event 14 July 2022, 9:00am - 3:15pm
A 2019 report by the Chartered Institute of Building found that 26% of construction industry professionals thought about taking their own lives, and that between 70% - 87% of respondents experienced depression or anxiety, which, alongside stress, account for one fifth of work-related illnesses. This amounts to 70 million days lost to sick leave annually, at an estimated annual cost of £70bn-£100bn according to the National Building Specification. Suicide now kills more construction workers than falls every year, with an analysis of ONS statistics by Glasgow Caledonian University finding that those in the sector are 3.4 times more likely to die by suicide that workers in other sectors. Meanwhile, up to 56% of construction professionals work for organisations with no policies on mental health in the workplace.
This timely event will outline best practice for mental health support in construction, with guidelines from industry experts, and success stories from leading stakeholders. It will cover vital topics including implementing cultural change, reducing stigma, with systematic approaches to leadership and holistic approaches to mental health and wellbeing in the built environment sector.
