Heike Bartel (she/her) is Professor of Health Humanities and German Studies at the University of Nottingham in the School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies. Her research combines her training in literature, history and art, and her expertise in narratives of illness, recovery, trauma and gender. Her particular interest is in health inequalities and gender and she has worked extensively on raising awareness for eating disorders in men and boys. She advocates the inclusion of personal accounts of lived experience in research and her outputs include numerous articles and the book Men Writing Eating Disorders. Autobiographical Writing and Illness Experience in English and German Narratives (2020). She has co-produced with men training tools for healthcare professionals, including ‘Consider Eating Disorders in Men’ accredited by the Royal College of GPs featuring this film. Her work has been awarded THE Research Project of the Year 2021.
