Climate Change 2021: Meeting the Challenges of Net Zero Carbon

Online Event 2 December 2021, 9:00am - 3:10pm

Overview

Climate change is a real and pervasive issue that has far-reaching impacts across sectors with the PSSA (Public Sector Sustainability Association) reporting that the Earth the warmest it has been, with 19 of the 20 warmest years on record all occurring since 2001. With the negative impacts of climate change threatening to permeate all our lives from housing and where we live to the food we eat, it is no surprise that 230 councils in the UK have already declared a climate emergency.

In 2019, the UK Government and the devolved administrations committed to the Net Zero target as recommended by the Climate Change Committee. In the 2021 Budget, the Chancellor announced a £15 billion sovereign green bond to aid in the transition to Net Zero by 2050. According to the budget, the “green industrial revolution” will require significant infrastructural investment.

In order to facilitate this transition, the public sector has to collaborate and develop flexible frameworks across energy systems, create new insights and use evidence to push for new solutions and policy recommendations.

Our Climate Change in the Public Sector 2021 event will explore the current challenges facing the public sector. It will provide an open space for discussion on how to fulfil green targets, develop local climate action strategies, and build sustainable housing. It will also promote debates on how best to train and attract current and new talent in the environmental sustainability space and work towards achieving bigger goals, such as net-zero emissions by 2050.
