Implementing the Knowledge Exchange Framework 2022

Online Conference 6 April 2022, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Overview

Knowledge Exchange serves as the main driving force for Higher Education Institutions to drive UK’s economy in the post-COVID-19 era. In March 2021, Research England issued the first iteration of Knowledge Exchange Framework to further encourage the growth of research and development in the UK by motivating universities. However, the UK’s total R&D expenditures in 2020 were the lowest among advanced countries with only 1.8 percent of total GDP. In the wake of economic recovery, the data conveyed an immediate need for universities to increase their partnerships with business, public, and the third sectors.

Increasing resources are put in the pool to encourage universities to expand their roles in the wider society. Research England developed and modified the Knowledge Exchange Framework to help universities to understand their strengths and develop a wide range of knowledge-based exchanges between higher education institutions and the rest of the world. This comes with an additional £25 million funding in 2020-2021 allocated by Higher Education Innovation, alongside the original £230 million funding during 2018-2019.

This event highlights the key indicators of the Knowledge Exchange Framework with its first iteration, reflects the impact of the pandemic, and identifies an innovative plan to implement the initiative. It will present the latest and best practice in translating the framework into activities, broadening communication and engagement with the society, and incorporating innovation with the existing decision-making process.
