Health & Safety in the Workplace 2022

Online Event 28 July 2022, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Overview

According to the Labour Force Survey, 1.7 million workers suffer from new or long-standing work-related ill health in 2020/21, with a total cost to the United Kingdom of £16.2 billion as of 2018/19.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the rate of self-reported work-related stress, depression, or anxiety rose to 822,000 workers in 2020/21. The additional impact of work-related musculoskeletal disorders affected 470,000 workers in 2020/21, representing 28% of all work-related ill-health.

In December 2021, HSE reported that the unprecedented changes to the workplace caused significant changes to health and safety trends, with the influence of furlough reducing the total number of people suffering work-related conditions.

This changing workplace environment has affected the scope of health and safety challenges, particularly given the increase of people working from home, and the effects of COVID-19 on mental health. Creating a better and more robust workplace requires providing effective control measures and risk management strategies to minimise the risk of COVID-19 infection, assisting those who are clinically vulnerable, and taking new approaches to support those at risk of harm.

Workplace Health and Safety legislation should recognise these shifts, looking at the need for new provisions to address these key challenges and protect employees from harm.

This event will address the urgent health and safety challenges and the emerging threats developing during the COVID-19 pandemic. It will examine the mechanisms for strengthening health and safety practices to ensure workplace compliance and protection for all, using case studies and best practice examples.
