Championing the Evolution and Regeneration of High Streets

Online 21 July 2022, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Overview

The end of Plan B Covid-19 restrictions has brought back the optimism in rising footfall in the High Streets. After witnessing the lowest footfall pattern and declining sales in 2020, the trend shows that shoppers are returning back to the town centres with a wider expectation to boost the retail industry. In January 2022, the Government’s Levelling up White Paper further aims to increase “pride of place” to elevate people’s satisfaction with town centres and communities. However, considering the rising Omicron cases and the modern working pattern – home working, how to build back High Street with the Net Zero and economic goals remains a challenge needed to be addressed.

The data from the 2020-21 Review of High Street Footfall in England revealed that retailing is no longer a dominant occupier in town centres – alarming evidence to local hospitality businesses. Therefore, thinking of building back High Streets in 2022 is no longer a discussion on obtaining more funding, but a wiser spatial design that embraces efficient, digitalised, carbon neutral, and gender-friendly practices.

This timely event will explore the latest policies on the Government’s Levelling Up White Paper and its blueprints to provide more connectivity and accessibility across the UK. This event also highlights the best-case studies from the Top-10 footfall recovery cities, as well as localised town planning that presents the successful transformative cases.
