How can we build a truly inclusive system for autistic and ADHD people when demand is rising faster than services can respond?
Autism and ADHD services across the UK are under unprecedented pressure, with NHS England confirming in 2025–26 that demand has surged across mental health, autism and ADHD pathways, contributing to significant waiting lists and system strain. An independent NHS England ADHD Taskforce (2025) highlighted widespread variation in access, long delays for assessment, and the need for more joined-up, cross-sector approaches spanning education, health and employment. Alongside this, the Government has launched a major independent review into autism, ADHD and mental health services to inform the next 10 Year Health Plan, focusing on early intervention, inequalities and the role of diagnosis in accessing support.
Despite progress in policy development, the system continues to face structural challenges. The Autism Act review (2026) response reinforced persistent inequalities in access to diagnosis, education support and employment outcomes, while calling for improved co-production and cross-government delivery.
However, significant challenges remain long waiting times for assessment, inconsistent regional provision, fragmented pathways between services, and limited capacity within schools, NHS services and local authorities. Many neurodivergent people still struggle to access timely support, particularly during the long gap between referral and diagnosis.
The Institute of Government & Public Policy has earned a reputation for delivering insightful and thought-provoking Diversity, Equity and Inclusion conferences and training. The Institute of Government & Public Policy’s Autism and ADHD Conference and Exhibition will bring together senior leaders from across health, education, local government and the voluntary sector to address these challenges head-on.
Join the Institute of Government & Public Policy for The Autism and ADHD Conference and Exhibition 2026, an exciting educational event that will provide a collaborative space for those responsible for designing, commissioning and delivering services to share best practice and work through how public services can become more neuroinclusive, equitable and effective for autistic and ADHD children, young people and adults.
