Approaches to Effectively Preventing and Managing Chronic Conditions and Multimorbidities

Online Conference 10 November 2022, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Overview

As of 2018, around 26 million people in England have at least one Long Term Condition, and this places individuals at greater risk of mental health conditions and higher susceptibility to other medical conditions.

Chronic diseases vary from Parkinson’s disease to diabetes, strokes, arthritis, and beyond, presenting individual difficulties including completing daily tasks and quality of life, as well as wider societal problems on healthcare systems.

The Chief Medical Officer’s Annual Report highlighted the challenges of multiple chronic diseases, known as ‘multimorbidity’ within medical science, with the need for both specialist and generalist skills to understand this and deliver quality services.

The NHS is currently reforming primary care services to support patients with chronic conditions and improve collaboration with GPs, community-based and social care services. The rise in cases of Long COVID-19 have led to new difficulties, with an estimated 2.1% of the UK population reporting long COVID symptoms as of January 2022.

By 2035, multimorbidity is predicted to rise to two-thirds of adults aged of 65, with a third also experiencing a mental illness.

The aging population in the United Kingdom is also affected by chronic health, with increased lifespan also having many additional years spent with health problemswith 40% of those aged 65 years and over in England reporting at least one chronic condition and over 15% having at least two.

The event will address the challenges of chronic illnesses within the NHS, the workplace, and across wider society. It will focus on how chronic health affects individuals and communities, and how the COVID-19 pandemic has altered the approach to dealing with chronic health, particularly given the rise of long covid cases.
