Online Event 27 July 2022, 9:00am - 2:45pm
According to the Office of National Statistics, the UK construction industry has seen productivity levels remaining consistently below the UK average. The Covid-19 pandemic has meant that productivity was volatile due to lockdowns and restrictions. Output per hour was 2% higher in 2020 than in 2019.
Over the last 14 years, the construction workforce has become older and better educated. In 1997, almost 1.9 million people worked in the construction industry and 700,000 of them were self-employed. By 2019 the number of workers had risen to 2.3 million, with 90,000 self-employed people.
According to a June 2022 report by the CITB, in the next few years, the construction industry will experience significant growth across the UK, with . However to fuel this growth, by 2026, the industry will need to recruit an additional 226,000 new workers just to meet demand. In order to attract enough new workers, the industry needs to build bridges between FE and work and make apprenticeships more flexible. Also, higher energy costs, material shortages, and associated price inflation must be overcome to make these encouraging growth predictions a reality across the industry.
This timely event will examine the key issues around people, process and product which make up the total of numerous factors that influence efficiencies. It will examine how the industry can improve human resources to create a future-ready workforce and how to address labour shortages and upskill the existing workforce.
