Gabriella is Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics and in the Social Research Institute at University College London; Research Fellow at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and at the Institute for Labor in Bonn; Associate Editor at the Journal of Health Economics and at Health Economics, and scientific adviser of the Lancet Commission for Gender-Based Violence and Maltreatment of Young People.
Gabriella’s research studies the causes and consequences of inequalities in health, and examines impacts, mechanisms and RoIs of policies aimed at preventing or reducing them, with a focus on women’s and children’s well-being. She has studied several programmes in US, UK and Ecuador (such as the Nurse Family Partnership and Universal Health Visiting); and population-level health insurance policies such as RSBY in India and Seguro Popular in Mexico. Gabriella has published in top journals in different disciplines, ranging from Science to Lancet and the Journal of Human Resources. She has won prestigious awards, such as the Philip Leverhulme Prize in Economics, the Nick Hales Award from the DOHaD society, and the ERC Consolidator Award from the European Research Council. She ranks among the top 3% Female Economists (source: RePeC) world-wide, only considering her publications in economics in the last 10 years.
Gabriella holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Essex. Prior to joining UCL, she was a Post-Doctoral Scholar (under the mentorship of Nobel Prize Winner James Heckman) and an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago.
