How can the public sector contribute to the Net Zero emissions target?
The UK Government has committed to achieving Net Zero by 2050. With emissions already 50.4% lower than 1990 levels, the country has made substantial progress - but the toughest challenges still lie ahead.
According to the Climate Change Committee, over 80% of the emissions reductions needed by 2030 must come from sectors beyond energy, including transport, buildings, and industry. Achieving this will rely heavily on local government. However, with limited budgets, many councils lack the resources to meet their Net Zero goals. In light of this, public sector organisations must take a proactive approach - embracing innovative, cost-effective strategies to advance the sustainability agenda.
Decarbonising core public sector functions has never been more critical. With transport, buildings, and industry among the UK’s biggest greenhouse gas contributors, the public sector must lead through clear guidance, strong frameworks, and impactful decision-making that drives a sustainable future.
The Institute of Government & Public Policy is known for delivering thought-leading energy and sustainability conferences. The National Achieving Net Zero in the Public Sector Show will bring together senior leaders and influencers from across the public sector - including central government, local authorities, the NHS, academia, and housing associations.
This one-day conference will showcase practical solutions, successful case studies, and engaging discussions on the challenges and opportunities facing the sector. The day opens with a keynote from Professor Piers Forster, Interim Chair of the Climate Change Committee, and features speakers from organisations including the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), West Yorkshire Combined Authority, and WRAP.
