Case Study: Beyond The City: Decarbonisation Of Long-Distance Travel
  • Transport policy has focused on urban transport, but there is need to look at areas outside cities
  • There is a perception that car travel is inevitable for all journeys outside cities, but there are options; the University of Hertfordshire has run roundtables looking at these
  • Better public transport, demand responsive transport, car sharing, mobility hubs, e-bikes, cargo bikes and car clubs were all found to be good options as alternatives to conventional car use
  • There is a need to link transport policy to spatial planning and to social  policy to reduce car dependence and social exclusion
