Overview

Despite the fact that women make up approximately 47% of the workforce, only 27% of STEM workers are female (as of 2019). While this number represents a significant increase over the past (women in STEM accounted for only 8% of workers in 1970), there is still much work to be done to attain equity and equality.

The female labour force participation rate was 71.8 percent, down from a high of 72.4 percent a year ago. The employment rate for men was 80.6 percent. Full-time employment accounted for 9.61 million women, while part-time employment accounted for 5.88 million. Part-time work was mostly dominated by women (38%) relative to men (13%).

Prior to Covid-19, the most recent data showed that UK women received nearly a fifth (17.3 percent) less than men on average. While the gap has narrowed in recent decades, it will take many decades to close at the current rate of decline. Since the start of the pandemic, women have seen a rise in redundancies, unemployment, and people claiming unemployment benefits. Women have been furloughed at a higher rate than men under the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, partly because women are more likely to work in a field that has been affected by the pandemic.

This event will address the most pressing issues for female professionals in the workplace that have emerged as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The event will discuss the means of supporting women in STEM workplaces and building the female talent pipeline as well as inspiring the next generation of female leaders.
