Abolishing Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking

Online Conference 14 December 2022, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Overview

In 2020, the Council of Europe’s Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings (GRETA), reported that there were over 10,000 possible victims of human trafficking in the UK, this is a significant jump from just over 1,000 possible victims reported in 2012. Those targeted are often those most vulnerable within society, from those fleeing warzones to individuals facing financial difficulties. The exploitation experienced is degrading and incredibly harmful, and not something that should be happening in the 21st century.

The Home Office is responsible for coordinating the government’s response to tackling modern slavery and human trafficking. In 2021, the government launched The Modern Slavery Statement Registry, representing the government’s commitment to improving the transparency within supply chains, with over 21,000 organisations partaking and submitting statements. The government's commitment to reviewing The 2014 Modern Slavery Strategy aims to ensure it addresses and targets present-day challenges.

This event will assess the progress in the UK's abolishment of human tracking and modern slavery. We will explore the changing nature of the threat, and how the approach to tackling it must change with it. We will examine the support and welfare of those involved in such atrocities, assess its current state, and address where further funding and support are needed. The topic of human trafficking and modern slavery needs to be addressed and vocalised more openly, to ensure traction is gained on such an important yet often overlooked topic. Join us as we discuss how to abolish modern slavery and human trafficking.
