The Second Annual Countering Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Event 2022

Online Event 24 February 2022, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Overview

According to the Office of National Statistics, 7.5% of adults are estimated to have experienced sexual abuse before they are 16.  In the year ending March 2020, over 83,000 Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (CSEA) offences were recorded by police, an increase of approximately 267% since 2013.

The economic cost relating to CSEA in the year ending 31 March 2019 is estimated to be at least £10 billion according to the Home Office.  COVID-19 has made the situation more acute.  The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) processed 16% more child sexual abuse material (CSAM) reports in 2020 compared to 2019.  The Government’s Tackling Child Sexual Abuse Strategy was published in March 2021 and the Government has continued a £30 million uplift for their funding for the CSEA response for 2020/21.

This event will examine the latest developments in the tackling of child sexual abuse and exploitation including the Government’s Tackling Child Sexual Abuse Strategy and recent reports by other key agencies including The Children’s Society and the Centre for Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse. Attendees will hear case study examples of collaborative working in prevention and response to CSEA from the police, the NHS, local authorities and the voluntary sector.

Last year's Countering Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse 2021 event featured keynote presentations and case studies from representatives of the Metropolitan Police Service, SWGfL, NWG Network, Nottinghamshire County Council, and more. In 2022, we aim to continue the conversation, inviting representatives from key organisations that work to tackle child sexual exploitation and abuse, to present keynote addresses and case studies on the issue.
