Online Conference 3 November 2022, 9:00am - 3:00pm
The need to establish and transform quality higher education campuses and estates has become increasingly apparent in recent years, prompting a rise in new initiatives designed to improve their quality and efficiency. In September 2020, the government launched a £1.5 billion Further Education Transformation Fund aimed at upgrading estates and preventing deterioration. So far, this has been allocated to over 180 higher education providers.
The COVID-19 pandemic has continued to impede progress on development initiatives, maintenance, and planning of future work, with 65% of universities reporting that capital development projects were paused or cancelled by July 2020, affecting spending plans by an estimated £374 million.
Developing a strong higher education system requires managing campuses and estates which are able to adapt to emerging challenges and can organise teaching and learning, utilise space, handle funding, and direct student expectations. Involving nearby communities and encouraging active participation in facilities by its users can enhance the estate. Examining these opportunities can provide socioeconomic benefits for higher education estates and can improve the public image of universities. Looking forward, higher education estates will face challenges in integrating new technologies, enhancing quality through investment programmes, and delivering on sustainability targets.
This event will address the current state of higher education estates as well as the opportunities for improvement in terms of quality, nearby links, environmental practices, and beyond. It will examine how spaces can adapt in order to increase their value and explore practical examples of positive estate development schemes.
