Peter Squires is a Professor [Emeritus] of Criminology and Public Policy at the University of Brighton, where he worked for over 30 years. His work has covered a wide range of issues including: community safety, policing, youth crime, gangs, violence and anti-social behaviour management, as well as firearm-related crime. He was President of the British Society for Criminology (2015- 2019). He is the author of several books, the three most recent, Rethinking Knife Crime (Palgrave), co-authored with Dr. Elaine Williams was published in November 2021, an edited collection on Southern & Postcolonial Perspectives on Policing, Security and Social Order, (Bristol/Policy Press) appeared in May 2023, and Gender and Firearms: My Body, My Choice, My Gun (Routledge) examining the gun industry’s efforts to create a women’s market in firearms in the USA came out on April 1st 2024.
Prof. Squires has been an advisor on firearms controls (Home Affairs Select Committee, 2010), firearms licensing (2015) and was a member of the NPCC Independent Advisory Group on the Criminal Use of Firearms (now the NCA Firearms Prevent Board).
