How are special educational needs (SEN) schools across the UK managing challenges like oversubscription, overcrowding, and limited funding?
In July 2023, the school census reported that over 1.5 million pupils in England have SEN, an increase of 87,000 from 2022. This rise has continued since 2016, highlighting the urgent need for inclusive and equitable support across economic, ethnic, and gender lines.
In response, the UK Government released its SEND and Alternative Provision Improvement Plan in March 2023, which outlines a roadmap to provide the right support in the right place at the right time. This plan aims to improve outcomes for children and young people, enhance family experiences, and reduce financial strain on the system.
Following this, the Labour government’s latest budget included a £2.3 billion school funding increase, with £1 billion designated for SEND reform. However, most of this will address existing deficits, raising concerns about adequacy, while an additional £6.7 billion in capital investment will support school rebuilding and maintenance.
The Institute for Government & Public Policy is proud to continue building a reputation for delivering inspirational and empowering education conferences and events. Building on the success of the Manchester-based show, the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Conference is coming to London. This conference will bring together SENDCOs, inclusion leads, Headteachers, CEOs and representatives from Local Authorities, charities and social enterprises to explore the latest policies, guidance, and strategies to improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND.
