Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospital NHS Trust

Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon

Shantanu Rout is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust. He specialises in minimally invasive and advanced techniques for rectal lesions and colorectal disease, with a focus on reducing the need for major surgery and improving patient outcomes.

In June 2025, Dr Rout led the Trust’s first-of-its-kind robotic Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (r-TAMIS) using the da Vinci surgical robot, marking a milestone in robotic colorectal surgery in the Birmingham and Black Country region.

He emphasises the benefits of this approach: enhanced instrument manoeuvrability, removal of lesions in one piece for improved pathology assessment, and earlier recovery for patients.

Dr Rout is committed to delivering state-of-the-art care for patients with rectal polyps and early-stage cancers and advancing the use of robotics in colorectal practice. With his work at Sandwell & West Birmingham, he contributes to the Trust’s strategy of expanding robotic-assisted surgery to accelerate care delivery and reduce waiting times.
