Alastair Finney

Barts Health NHS Trust

Since April 2016, Alastair has been leading the programme for the redevelopment of Whipps Cross Hospital. This has involved establishing sound working relations across the local health and care system to ensure a partnership approach for developing and delivering proposals for the future of the Hospital. Alastair has led the work to produce a Strategic Outline Case (SOC) for the redevelopment of the site, which sets out the vision for an integrated health, care and wellbeing campus and identifies potential opportunities to be derived from the programme that makes a positive contribution to the regeneration agenda in this part of east London. He continues to lead the programme as it moves in to the detailed planning phase, the culmination of which will be the agreement of an Outline Business Case (OBC) in 2021.

Prior to working for Barts Health, Alastair was a Portfolio Director in the NHS Trust Development Authority (TDA), with responsibility for providing leadership and support to NHS trusts in north and east London. This included overseeing the performance management of these NHS Trusts, helping to make sure they provide high quality, sustainable services and providing guidance and support on their journey to achieving Foundation Trust status. In this role, Alastair worked closely with Barts Health on its journey of quality improvement, after it was placed in to 'special measures' in March 2015.

Prior to working for the TDA, Alastair was - for five years - Deputy Director for Strategy and Provider Development in NHS London, the strategic health authority for the capital, with a wide range of responsibilities including leading the health authority’s oversight of the delivery of Healthcare for London, designing the annual strategic planning round and leading NHS London’s support for commissioners in their planning. Alastair’s achievements in NHS London included ensuring the strategic coherence of major pan-London service transformation programmes, including the development of world-class major trauma and stroke services and the transformation of cardiovascular, cancer and mental health services.

Prior to working in NHS London, Alastair worked for the Department of Health in a number of policy and executive roles, including working directly alongside the Secretary of State for Health and other Ministers for four years.
