Dr Jack Bryne Stothard is a Senior Lecturer in Postgraduates Studies and Programme Director of Doctor of Education programme. During his time at the University of Derby, he has led the Teacher Education Research and Innovation cluster within Institute of Education, working with colleagues to conduct research into the areas of pedagogy, curriculum and teacher education policy. Moreover, he is Scholarly Lead for the University of Derby Public Services Research Theme as well as Ethics Champion for the College of Arts, Humanities and Education Ethics Board. Jack has a number of publications including articles, books and edited books. His most recent edited book - 'Planning for Adaptive Teaching in the Primary Curriculum' due to be published in June 2025 - explores the implementation of teacher education policy in the formation for curriculum in the primary school setting. 


Jack taught in primary schools for 10 years, holding a number of middle and senior leadership positions both in state and independent schools. With specialisms in music and mathematics, Jack has held various positions including Director of Music and Mathematics consultant. His research focuses on the use of critical theory and philosophy to inform classroom pedagogy as well as how Foucauldian theories support individuals to understand the role of power in the formation of identity. More broadly, his research interests involve critiquing embedded cultural, social and political norms and practices. Such norms may include the perceived inherent goodness of the schooling process, as well as the role schooling plays in the formation of subjectivities.
