A diverse and inclusive workplace is one in which all employees feel equally included and supported in all aspects of the workplace, regardless of who they are or what they do for the organisation.
According to a recent BITC Report, under-representation of minority ethnic groups in employment still remains an issue, and minority groups only take 6% of high-level positions in the public sector. Increasingly, more organisations have reported ethnicity pay gaps, with the majority of ethnic minority employees still earning less than their white counterparts overall. Furthermore, according to a Route2 study (2020), 37% percent of minority ethnic workers have been bullied, abused, or experienced racial discrimination at the hands of their employer. 19% have experienced discrimination in the form of being denied training or promotion.
Racial inequality is still considered to be embedded in various parts of the recruitment stage and working environment, from employment opportunities to discrimination in workplaces to ethnic ‘glass ceilings.’ The young generation in the UK is especially affected. A 2021 Carnegie UK report entitled ‘Race Inequality in the Workforce’ outlined that millennials from ethnic minority backgrounds were 58% more likely than white counterparts to be unemployed, 47% more likely to be on a zero-hours contract, and 4% less likely to have a permanent contract.
In light of the UK’s economic recovery, employers should take race, inclusion, diversity, and equality into consideration before they lose talent that the markets and industries are now craving. According to the Social Mobility Barometer 2021, over 50% of ethnic minorities believe the decisions of making changes are in the employers’ hands and actions should be taken immediately.
The Second Annual Race Inclusion and Diversity in the Workplace 2022 event will provide organisations with practical and actionable insights to determine the next steps in their race related inclusivity and diversity journey. Through a combination of policy updates and case study examples, delegates will get a comprehensive range of information on topics such as encouraging company-wide inclusive leadership, addressing ethnicity pay gaps, attracting, recruiting and maintaining ethnic minority talent, and developing new models of diversity practice.
