Senior Lecturer

Dr Chris Magill is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Brighton with over 20 years’ experience conducting research in the criminal justice sector, with an emphasis on Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). In her previous lecturing role, she founded and then led the Crime and Justice Research Group at London South Bank University. Dr Magill is also a former Government Social Researcher who has worked for the Ministry of Justice and the Crown Prosecution Service. She has contributed to evaluations of crime reduction initiatives, such as the Serious Youth Violence Prevention and Intervention Programme for Kent County Council and the use of hospital-based Independent Domestic Violence Advisors for Surrey County Council. Dr Magill was also one of a consortium of academics who successfully secured funds from the Home Office Perpetrator Programme to explore the potential of Artificial Intelligence in tackling Technology Facilitated Coercive Control. Dr Magill’s most recent research focused on police led responses to address violence against women and girls in the Night-Time Economy. She has secured funding from the College of Policing to support police forces in developing such projects. Dr Magill is also working on a Nuffield/British Academy funded project concerned with reintegrating women with convictions into their local communities. She is a Trustee for R.I.S.E, a Sussex based domestic abuse charity.
