John joined the SFO in 2014 and was appointed permanently as the SFO’s Chief Operating Officer on 28 May 2020. He is responsible for all operational divisions of the SFO and is a member of the SFO’s Board. His previous roles included Head of Law Enforcement Liaison and International Assistance and since April 2016, he headed what is now the SFO’s Strategy and Policy Division. His responsibilities there included strategic engagement with other law enforcement and government partners and external stakeholders as well as oversight of legal and legislative issues relevant to the SFO’s functions.

John has over 35 years’ law enforcement experience having worked in HM Revenue & Customs immediately prior to joining the SFO, the Ministry of Defence and the police, in both the UK and overseas. He has worked mainly in the field of intelligence and strategic analysis and has been responsible for identifying and assessing complex organised fraud and money laundering threats against the UK Government.
